How to Care For Your Deck Fire Pit

Your deck fire pit can be used nearly year-round to bring light and comfort to chilly evenings. If you want it to last for many years to come though, you'll need to get into the habit of caring for it. Regular maintenance may take a little extra effort, but the upkeep can be the key to protecting both the pit and the larger property. Watch the Ash The ashes of a fire can smolder long after the fire is out, and those embers can kick up quickly if the wind starts to blow. In addition to being a safety hazard, the acidity of ashes can cause fire pit damage over time. Experts recommend dousing ashes with water to ensure they're extinguished and collecting the ashes the next day. Reduce Cracking If you use your fire pit on particularly cold nights., it can stress the pit and cause it to crack. Some cracks are purely cosmetic, but severe cracks can pose a greater danger when in use. While you may not have a lot of snowy nights, consider using a footer leading to the frostline to protect the pit in plunging temperatures. Apply Sealants If your pit has decorative paver stones, you can use concrete or stone sealant to protect them. (These stones are made to be used outdoors, but they're not immune to erosion.) Applying a thin coat of sealant every year or so (depending on your rate of use) can protect the pit from extreme temperatures and precipitation. Don't Take Chances There are a few standard advice clauses that may escape people's minds in the name of convenience:
  • Sweep the fire pit ash in one direction
  • Clear the whole area around the fire pit (e.g., leaves, sticks, etc.)
  • Never use an accelerant
  • Let flames extinguish gradually
  • Don't keep any plastic near the fire pit
